dc.description.abstractEn la presente edición del Anuario estadístico de América Latina y el Caribe 2005 se incluye una serie de cambios importantes, tanto en lo que respecta al contenido como al diseño. El propósito ha sido responder a las nuevas exigencias de los investigadores que analizan la situación económica y social de la región e incorporar los avances tecnológicos que modifi can la difusión y el uso de la información estadística. El Anuario cuenta ahora con cuatro capítulos. En el primer capítulo se cubren los indicadores demográfi cos y sociales, que refl ejan el esfuerzo especial que se hizo para incluir la dimensión de género en la información estadística. En el segundo capítulo se reúnen las estadísticas económicas básicas, de comercio y balanza de pagos, y las cuentas nacionales. En virtud del creciente interés de la comunidad regional e internacional en el desarrollo sostenible, en el tercer capítulo se recopila la información disponible sobre el medio ambiente y los recursos naturales. La abundancia de datos —a menudo diferentes y a veces contradictorios— a los que los investigadores pueden acceder hoy en día mediante Internet obliga a prestar una especial atención a las fi chas técnicas en las que se documenta el origen de los datos, su defi nición y cobertura. Esta información se presenta en el cuarto capítulo, sobre metodología y metadatos.
dc.description.abstractEngThe 2005 edition of the Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean introduces a series of important modifi cations, both in content and design, the objective being to refl ect the changes in the demand of researchers who analyse the economic and social situation of the region and to incorporate the technological advances that modify the modes of dissemination and use of statistical information. This year’s issue of the Yearbook is made up of four chapters. The fi rst covers demographic and social indicators, which attest to the special effort made to incorporate the gender dimension in statistical information. The second chapter presents basic economic, trade and balance-ofpayments statistics as well as national accounts. Refl ecting the growing concern of the regional and international community for sustainable development, the third chapter provides available information on the environment and natural resources. Given the abundance of different and, at times, contradictory data now accessible to researchers through the Internet, special attention must be paid to the technical specifi cations relating to the source of the data as well as their defi nition and coverage. This information is presented in the fourth chapter, which deals with methodology and metadata.
