dc.description.abstractBienvenidos a la primera entrevista de "Historia Oral". En este ciclo de entrevistas exploramos cómo fue la CEPAL a través de las voces de sus protagonistas, quienes nos comparten su historia e implicancia de su labor en la institución. En esta primera entrevista, conversaremos con Jose Besa Garcia, un funcionario de larga trayectoria en CEPAL que trabajó estrechamente con muchos investigadores, en la organización de sus colecciones personales, así como en compilaciones temáticas institucionales. El nació en Valdivia, Chile, el 26 de junio de 1934, se trasladó a Santiago a los 11 años en búsqueda de mejores condiciones junto a su familia. Comenzó sus funciones laborales en CEPAL cuando tenía 18 años, como auxiliar de Biblioteca el 16 octubre de 1952, en la comuna de Providencia, en Santiago de Chile. Continuó estudiando y completó humanidades entre 1953-1956, posteriormente en la Universidad de Chile, cursó en 1957 bachillerato en letras y luego la carrera de Bibliotecología, graduándose en 1958. Sus estudios le permitieron ascender al puesto de Bibliotecario. En su larga trayectoria alcanzó la posición de jefe de la Biblioteca de la CEPAL, época en que creó importantes recopilaciones bibliográficas como los documentos sobre la reforma agraria 1968, “Antecedentes sobre la creación de la CEPAL” y “Escritos de Raúl Prebisch”. Se jubiló anticipadamente el año 1989 luego de 37 años de servicio, sin embargo, no abandonó el trabajo ligado a la Biblioteca y la CEPAL. Posterior a su retiro, realizó importantes trabajos de recopilación tales como “Archivo general del ILPES”, entre otros. La Sala de Archivo histórico de la CEPAL, lleva su nombre desde diciembre del 2016, en reconocimiento a su trayectoria.
dc.description.abstractEngWelcome to the "Oral History" interview series. Throughout these interviews, we explore the history of ECLAC through firsthand accounts of key staff members, who recount their experiences and the impact of their work within the institution. Our first guest is José Besa Garcia, a long-serving official at ECLAC who collaborated with many researchers to organize their personal collections, as well as curating institutional thematic compilations. He was born in Valdivia, Chile, on June 26, 1934, and moved to Santiago with his family at the age of 11 in search of better opportunities. He started his career at ECLAC when he was 18 years old, as a Library Assistant on October 16, 1952, in the Providencia district of Santiago de Chile. José continued his education and completed his studies in humanities between 1953-1956, and later at the University of Chile, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in literature in 1957 followed by a degree in Library Science in 1958. His studies allowed him to be promoted to Librarian. Over the years, he rose to the position of head of the ECLAC Library. In this period, he curated important bibliographic compilations such as the documents on the 1968 agrarian reform, “Background on the creation of ECLAC” and “Writings of Raúl Prebisch.” Although he took early retirement in 1989 after 37 years of service, José remained dedicated to his work with the Library and ECLAC. After his retirement, he carried out important compilation projects such as the "General Archive of ILPES”. In December 2016, the ECLAC Historical Archive Room was named in his honor, reflecting his valuable contribution to the institution.
