dc.description.abstractEn este documento se plasman los resultados del trabajo de investigación sobre las condiciones actuales de la competencia en El Salvador, así como los efectos que sobre la economía de ese país ha generado la ausencia de una ley de competencia y una política definida en este rubro, situación prevaleciente hasta 2006, cuando entró en vigor la nueva ley de competencia, la cual también ha sido analizada. Se espera que la Superintendencia de Competencia desempeñe un papel importante tendiente a mejorar el funcionamiento del mercado salvadoreño. En este trabajo se estudian, en particular, cinco sectores productivos, cuyos mercados presentan marcadas distorsiones, con diferentes grados de incidencia en los consumidores de El Salvador y de los países del Istmo Centroamericano, que por sus características presentan un gran desafío para la política de competencia. Dichas actividades están estrechamente vinculadas con el mercado internacional y, por tanto, reciben su influencia de diversas maneras. Se hace referencia a los sectores del azúcar, el cemento, el arroz, la harina de trigo y las líneas áreas. General conditions of competition of the Central American countries: the case of El Salvador Abstract: This report presents the results of the research over the current conditions of competition in El Salvador, pertaining to such indicators as the effects on the economy caused by the absence of policies and laws regulating competition. The report analyses the circumstances of this situation, prevalent until 2006 when a competition regulating law was implemented, as well as the circumstances after the law was implemented. The report also expresses the need for the Competition Supervising organ to improve the market mechanisms of the El Salvadorian market. Specifically, this report examines five productive sectors which markets present distinct distortions, with differing degrees of impacts on the consumers of El Salvador and other countries of the Central American Isthmus. These circumstances present a great challenge for competition policies focused on the international market. The sectors referred to in the report are sugar, cement rice, wheat flour and airlines.
