Abstract
Competition in the banking sector in Mexico Abstract: This report analyzes the competition within the banking system of Mexico from the perspective of the theory of contestable markets. By means of an examination of the evolution of the banking system in Mexico, the report argues that the analysis over competition between banks needs to widen its focus to include the financial system. In other words, it is important to consider the challenges facing banks in terms of other financial intermediaries as well as non financial intermediaries. The work concludes that in the market of certain financial products- particularly credit cards and financial intermediation of government bonds and bills - competition is non existent. As such, the report establishes that the commissions sponsored by the Bank of Mexico, may decrease the consumer surplus, a phenomenon that does not necessarily occur in other countries due to the existence of other competing agents within the sector.
