Abstract
Mexico: Economic evolution during 2008 and Outlook for 2009 Abstract: The growth rate of the Mexican economy decreased from 3.3 % in 2007 to 1.3% in 2008, which meant an increase of only 0.2% of GDP per capita. The poor performance was the result of the substantial downturn of the external demand, which in turn was caused by the severe global economic crisis; as well as a downturn of domestic demand, reflected in subdued private consumption and to a lesser extent of private investment. From the third trimester of 2008, exports fell considerably. The weakened internal demand resulted in an upturn of unemployment, a reduction of consumption credit and lower remittance flows. The rise of international prices of raw materials and foods during the first semester of 2008 provoked an acceleration of inflation rates, resulting in an increase in average inflation from 4% in 2007 to 5.1% in 2008.
