Abstract
Nicaragua: Economic evolution during 2008 and perspectives for 2009 Abstract: In 2007, the real GDP of Nicaragua grew by 3,2% in 2008. The buoyancy of consumption and investment compensated for the downturn of exports, brought on by the slowdown of the global economy, and particularly due to the recession in the United States. The GDP per inhabitant grew by 1.9%, a rate similar to the average of the present decade (2%). The rate of unemployment grew, reaching 6,1%. Inflation slowed down during the third quarter, reaching 13.8% by the end of the year. The central governments account balance experienced a slight deterioration, registering 4,1% of GDP. The current account deficit, rose significantly, to reach 23, 2% of GDP at the end of the year.
