dc.description.abstractUruguay presenta rasgos demográficos muy particulares y que tienen varias semejanzas con los de muchos países desarrollados. Es el país más envejecido de América Latina y el Caribe y tiene una larga y amplia historia en materia de protección social. En el plano de las de transferencias intergeneracionales, es posible identificar dos tipos: las públicas y las privadas; las primeras corresponden a prestaciones entregadas por el gobierno mediante mecanismos institucionalmente consolidados y regulados. El sistema de seguridad social constituye el principal mecanismo de transferencias pú- blicas en Uruguay y los adultos mayores son los principales beneficiarios de dichas transferencias, en contraste con los menores de 18 años. que reciben sólo una quinta parte del gasto público social total. Muchas veces, las transferencias privadas no tienen periodicidad ni montos predeterminados y dependen, en gran medida, de aspectos coyunturales o acuerdos sociales. Las evidencias encontradas en Uruguay indican que las actuales generaciones de trabajadores tienen una doble carga: por un lado, enfrentan su propia subsistencia y la de sus hijos y, por otro, contribuyen a la de sus padres.
