Geospatial information management to support sustainable development in Caribbean small island developing States. Policy Brief

Resumen

The Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS)1 are highly vulnerable to environmental and climate-related hazards due to their geographic location and socioeconomic conditions. Hydrological, climatological, geophysical and biological events have increased in frequency, intensity and occurrences (ECLAC, 2023a). The high concentration of population and economic activities in low-lying coastal zones amplify the exposure and vulnerabilities of these countries. Effective and sustained management of the environment, natural resources and climate-related hazards requires both time-based and location-specific information, also known as geospatial information.2 Governments and other developmental partners use geospatial information management systems to support evidence-based decision-making for sustainable development.
