dc.description.abstractEl documento tiene como objetivo conocer el efecto del Tratado de Libre Comercio en América del Norte (TLCAN); sobre las ventas de productos agropecuarios mexicanos en los Estados Unidos. Para ello se estima la función de importaciones agropecuarias estadounidenses procedentes de México, usando diversas técnicas de análisis de series de tiempo. Desde el punto de vista teórico, la firma del tratado debería ser la causa del creciente comercio de bienes agrícolas entre los dos países.Sin embargo, en concordancia con estudios previos, el análisis econométrico encontró que el TLCAN no es el causante del mayor flujo comercial. Los principales determinantes en la ecuación de importaciones son el tipo de cambio real y la tendencia temporal. En el caso del tipo de cambio, la elasticidad de las importaciones se estima en un rango de entre -0,2 y -0,5, cifras parecidas a las halladas en estudios semejantes para otros países. The effect of NAFTA on United States' agricultural imports from Mexico Abstract: The main objective of this document is to examine the North American Free Trade Agreement's (NAFTA); effect on the sales of Mexican agricultural products in the United States market. The study estimates a function for the US agricultural imports originating in Mexico, by using diverse techniques on time series analysis. From a theoretical viewpoint, the signing of the treaty should be the cause of the increasing trade in agricultural goods between the two countries. However, in accordance with previous studies, the econometrical analysis found that NAFTA is not the major cause behind an increased flow of trade. The main determinants in the import equations were exchange rates and temporary trends. Regarding exchange rates, import elasticity was estimated in the range of -0, 2 and -0, 5, closely resembling the results to those of similar studies conducted in other countries.
