dc.description.abstractEl presente documento tiene como propósito aportar elementos para la toma de decisiones de las autoridades centroamericanas en cuanto a políticas públicas de corto, mediano y largo plazo, en el contexto de la desaceleración económica mundial al tiempo que los precios de los alimentos y de los energéticos se mueven al alza. Este trabajo consta de cuatro capítulos. En el primero, se examinan las tendencias globales, en particular el alza de precios de alimentos y del petróleo y sus principales causas. En el capítulo II, se presentan las proyecciones de precios internacionales y posibles repercusiones para la economía y las sociedades centroamericanas. En el tercer capitulo, se aborda la capacidad de respuesta de los países de la subregión en los ámbitos macroeconómico, social, energético, agropecuario ante el desafío de la crisis global. En el cuarto capítulo, se proponen medidas centroamericanas para aprovechar las oportunidades y mitigar los efectos adversos de la coyuntura internacional, y se señalan algunas orientaciones a partir de las decisiones de los Presidentes y Ministros en el contexto del SICA. Isthmus Central America: Global crisis, challenges, opportunities and new strategies Abstract: The purpose of this document is to offer support to Central American decision makers in their formulation of short, medium, and long term public policies, within the context of a global economic downturn, and rise of food and energy prices. The document consists of four chapters. The first chapter examines global trends, particularly the rise of food and oil prices, as well as their main causes. Chapter two presents projections for international prices and possible socio economic repercussions in Central America, the third chapter examines the challenges presented by the global financial crisis in the macroeconomic, social, energy and agricultural spheres. In addition, the fourth chapter suggests actions to make the most out of opportunities and mitigate the effects of the joint international adversity, and points out some guidelines   based on the decisions of the Presidents and Ministers in the context of the Central American Information System, (SICA).
