dc.description.abstractSe reflexiona, a partir de datos censales de Chile, sobre las dificultades y complejidades de los mecanismos de recolección de datos de la población indígena. Diversos autores han manifestado en sus estudios una cierta actitud crítica hacia la cuantificación censal de la población indígena en América Latina, que deriva en fenómenos como la sobredeclaración, entendida como aquellos individuos que se declaran indígenas sin serlo. En este documento, se examinan algunos problemas metodológicos y demográficos asociados a dicha problemática. También se intenta cuantificar la población indígena y mapuche, con el fin de realizar comparaciones válidas de la evolución de la población indígena en los últimos tres censos. Por último, se analiza la composición urbano-rural de la población indígena, en general, y mapuche, en particular; una variable que siempre está en el centro de las discusiones sobre su localización y el impacto de la sociedad moderna en sus actuales dinámicas sociales y culturales.
