dc.description.abstractEl Anuario estadístico de América Latina y el Caribe pretende responder a las demandas de los usuarios que requieren información estadística confiable y rigurosa para el análisis de la situación económica, social y ambiental de la región. La estructura de la presente edición del Anuario estadístico es similar a la de 2009 ya que no se han introducido modificaciones importantes en términos de contenidos o diseño. El Anuario cuenta con cuatro capítulos. En el primero se presentan los indicadores demográficos y sociales y se refleja el esfuerzo especial realizado para incluir la dimensión de género en la información estadística. En el segundo se reúnen las estadísticas económicas de comercio, balanza de pagos y precios, así como las cuentas nacionales. En virtud del creciente interés de la comunidad regional e internacional en el desarrollo sostenible, en el tercer capítulo se recopila la información cuantitativa disponible sobre el medio ambiente. En este caso, se prioriza la información proveniente de fuentes internacionales aunque se continuan reportando —en la versión electrónica— los datos disponibles y recopilados por la CEPAL directamente en cada uno de los países de la región. La abundancia de información —a menudo diferente y a veces contradictoria— a la que los usuarios pueden acceder hoy en día mediante Internet obliga a prestar particular atención a las fichas técnicas en que se documenta el origen de los datos, su definición y cobertura. Esta referencia se presenta en el cuarto capítulo, sobre metodología y metadatos, que complementa la información más específica que figura en las notas al pie de los cuadros del Anuario.
dc.description.abstractEngThe Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean seeks to respond to the demands of users who require reliable and sound statistical information in order to analyse the economic, social and environmental situation of the region. This edition of the Statistical Yearbook is similar in structure to the 2009 edition as no significant changes in terms of content or design have been introduced. The Yearbook comprises four chapters. The first covers demographic and social indicators, reflecting special efforts to mainstream the gender perspective in statistical information. The second chapter presents economic statistics relating to trade, balance-of-payments and prices, as well as national accounts. Taking account of the growing concern of the regional and international community for sustainable development, the third chapter provides the quantitative information available on the environment. While priority is given to data from international sources, the electronic version also includes the data available and compiled by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) on each of the countries of the region. Given the abundance of different, sometimes conflicting, data now accessible to researchers through the Internet, special attention must be paid to the data sheets on which the source of the data, their definition and coverage are specified. This information is presented in the fourth chapter, which deals with methodology and metadata, supplementing the more specific information contained in the footnotes to each of the tables of this Yearbook.
